At around £441 in the UK it is one of the cheapest ways into genuine simulator golf, it moves easily between the garage, the driving range and the garden, and it measures a genuinely useful spread of numbers. Where it compromises is spin and side-to-side accuracy, especially indoors, and that is the honest trade-off for the price.

What the Garmin R10 is, and what it measures

The R10 is a radar-based portable launch monitor, small enough to sit in a golf bag pocket, that pairs with the Garmin Golf app on your phone or tablet. It sits behind the ball, reads both club and ball data, and comes with a tripod, phone mount and up to 10 hours of battery life in the box, which is what makes it as happy at a driving range as in a garage.

On the data side it punches above its price. It reports club head speed, club face angle, club path, angle of attack, ball speed, launch angle, launch direction, spin rate, spin axis, smash factor, apex height, carry distance, total distance and deviation (how far offline the shot finished). That is a fuller data set than most sub-£500 units, and enough to actually work on your game rather than just watch a ball fly.

Accuracy: what to trust, and what to take with a pinch of salt

Garmin publishes accuracy figures of roughly plus or minus 3 mph for club head speed, 1 mph for ball speed, 1 degree for launch angle and launch direction, and 5 yards for carry distance. Those are strong numbers for the money.

Independent testing broadly backs that up for the core numbers. Ball speed, carry and total distance come out close to premium units like Trackman, and club head speed holds up well too. For distance-based practice and simulator rounds, the R10’s data is trustworthy.

The two weak spots are spin rate and side-to-side (lateral) accuracy. Indoors this gets worse, for a specific reason: the radar needs to see the ball travel a fair distance past impact (Garmin quotes around 8 feet) to count enough revolutions for a reliable spin reading. In a garage where a screen or net stops the ball within a few feet, it simply has less to work with, so spin becomes an estimate and start-line and shot-shape reads with the driver can wander.

Indoors that means roughly 14 feet of total depth for its most reliable reads (around 6 to 8 feet behind the ball plus another 8 or so in front to the screen), and accuracy can fall off in rooms tighter than about 10 feet.
